ENTER THE WORLD OF GABBI MAGANA
Gabbi Magana is a Houston based artist born in Mexico. She moved from Mexico after having worked as a nutritionist at a public hospital. After a few years in California, she stablished herself in Houston where she developed her artistic career.
In her work, Gabbi focuses on social issues pertaining to the female and Latino experience, which many times interlace in her work. Her objective is to make the viewer feel included in the conversation of their own experiences. The work also aims to offer a glimpse of somebody else’s experience to viewers who might not be exposed to other’s points of view and to provoke emotions that result in conversations about inclusion and tolerance.
Gabbi works in mixed media paintings, where the interaction of paint and other materials is used to bring the subject matter closer to the viewer. Gabbi uses the idea of projecting the elements of the artwork, so it will step into the viewers world and make the subject matter feel more real and tangible. The use of mixed media also talks about the constant change of the social issues at hand. Gabbi uses that tool to talk about the imperfection and unpolished human experience and referring to the process in itself and suggesting that some details of the narrative still remain hidden.
With her work, she hopes to add to the conversation of representation in the art world. Impact viewers in a way that they engage in conversations where different points of view and perspectives can be approached.
